I just read over on the mage boards about how attunable gear works for pets. When you suspend a pet, the gear becomes no-drop and the pets instantly destroy the gear. However, zoning is different and they keep the gear.

I did not know this, but it certainly explains how many pets of mine got whacked out of the blue when wearing 20k or more of gear from the bazaar. See, I suspend the pet to reset the enrage timer.

So those of us that try to do stupid stuff like pet-tank summoning (or close-quarters) tier3 mobs now and then doing "solo" tasks - suspend = vanishing attunable gear.

Makes sense in a twisted code logic sort of way... They should just go back to letting pets use no-drop equipment :)

Why did they ever stop allowing pets to use no-drop equipment?

I think it was a change that predates the NO PET tag on items, whereby they were too lazy to make a NO PET tag at the time (or do whatever refactoring would have been required to make that happen) and are now either too lazy or too complacent about it to allow pets to use NO DROP items once more.

This might be the missing link for our pet performance.

Suspend has been a staple of my play style since well, forever. When suspend was disovered to reset the enrage timer - that became a extreme use feature. I don't know how many (dozens? hundreds?) of pets I've geared up the last year or so and then suspend to save for later. Or suspend and camp for the next day. Heck, I even suspend pets all the time just out of habbit if I was not in combat to lose the visual sewage, howling sound or to keep buff timers from running down.

My most recent (and still very painful) pet blunder was trying to solo a hatchery task - the one where you capture the sokakar broodling and then get 10 treats. I gave up after only getting 4 treats, which was something on the order of 100k worth of pet gear & 5-7 trips to the bazaar (& bind point) later.

I distinctly remember the last attempt - I used as much archaic plate armor as I could find and the remaining few pieces was the new elegant defiant; the only "summoned" items were weapons and belt. This was something like a 40k pet. I used companions blessing & durability and then suspended it to keep those buffs running...before I even left the bazaar. I waited until those refreshed before unsuspending in the hatchery and going at it so they could be used again...only to camp out shaking with rage less than a minute & a rez later. I have been blaming poor pet performance on a combination of our pet and the inability for t3 mercs to perform...waiting for a magicial leap in performance after I get t4 or t5.

Anyways...now that I am aware of this I can mitigate it. I'll probably stick suspend hotkey a page back just to eliminate the reflexive habit use.

So yeah, I feel ultra retarded. Maybe this will turn my opinion around now that I know how to properly keep pet gear.

Back when pets first got enrage (Velious era? luclin?) they followed the same mechanic as the war discipline, a 1hr reuse or near.

Suspending a pet and unsuspending resets this timer to 0. I was a mage for my first 6-7 years and this was the biggest benefit to suspending a pet. Of course, back then there was nothing in the group game that could outright kill a pet that had more than 11% health - so you could intentionally use the pet enrage as a reliable feature & healing point.

It's not so much important anymore because most group trash can take a nec pet from 40%+ life to corpse in a single round. That, and mob strikethrough defeats enrage - so it's not the emergancy 10 seconds of invulnerability & increase dps that it was originally designed to be.

The strikethrough got fixed, or at least downgraded in the last patch afaik.

I guess I cannot say with any real certainty, but I could have sworn my pet enraged multiple times within an hour for sure and I have not started suspending until recently (to save fort) tbh.
