View Full Version : Concordance of Research Quest

I just wanted to share something that I learned while getting my Research skill up with the Concordance of Research quest. First of all, DO NOT even attempt to do this quest until you reach level 19. Period. I tried doing it at 16 and wasted many items and got so frustrated because I wasn't going up in skill. I found a great research site, Mythiran Tower (EverQuest Research Site) (http://mythiran.allakhazam.com), and found out that the formula for the Research cap is (Level -15) x 5. You can train one point at level 16, and have a skill of 16. But you can't go up until you reach level 19.
Here is a link that tells all about the Concordance of Research quest: Research Quests for Evil Alignment (http://eq.crgaming.com/research/research_evil.asp)
I recommend bringing a high level friend with you to get the book you need, because I died right in front of the NPC I needed to see, before I could get the book!!
To get pieces of parchment and a quill, see the vendor inside the Necro Guild that sells necromancer supplies. You only need one quill, you get it back everytime. But stock up on parchment.
Now, once I had everything I needed, I made the Practice Azia and Beza until trivial, but I skipped the Apprentice ones because the ingredients were too hard to find, and in fact, some of them may not even exist! Therefore, I went directly to the Training Azia/Beza and my skill went up just fine. There is one thing you should know about the Training Beza. One of the ingredients is Raw Hide Armor. ONLY USE THE PIECES THAT THEY SPECIFY!! Only those pieces will combine. I just wanted to emphasize that. Boots, belts, gloves, sleeves, leggings will NOT work. Rawhide armor can be a challenge to find, but the two ways I got it were scouring the Plane of Knowledge vendors and the Bazaar, and having a high level friend make a run to HHK to buy it off of vendors.
Well, that's all I can think of now. I'm only level 26 but wanted to share some of the knowledge I've gained so far. Hope it helps.

I don't know why people still bother with this. I usually just save up about 20pp and head to trained in PoK. I've upped my research to 60 just using training points. At a certain level you can't up them anymore... I think I was 16 and I used 4 more to get them to 20 and then they were capped. Then at level 27 I tried again and got researching to 60.
Sorry to repeat myself... I am known for over re-itteration (sp?)

At level 165 research cost 35 plat per point to train. This goes up about a plat each point right now as well. It will get worse.
To waste words trying to make things well above your skill is REALLY wasteful and expensive. The 49 spells that I can get skill ups for are words that cost 3 to 5 plat from vendors and are hard to find (except for the words for Dead Man Floating they drop like MAD in Dualk Harbor psyche and burnishing).
If you want to play witht eh newbie intro question have fun. Not sure it is really worth teh effort when you can train this fairly cheap.
The crappy part is managing words. Your friends will hand you ever Writ and Tomb Page and Rune from the land, but try to find Words of Allure (24 pet) and you'll yank your hair out.
So, BUY the skill ups. Save the words till you are at least CLOSE on the trivial for the level before you burn them. Get a Shaman's 10 slot alchemy bag to hold the words. They ahve 10 slots and more slots is best for words as they tend to stack up. I carry on average 75 words on me and do not hold on to workable combines for long.
Also, the Book you get in Freeport is 4 slots. There is a better book in Gunthak that I beleive is 6 slots. That is just nice to have the extra slots and for the >50 level spells you will need it anyway.

Mixylplix:
Before you can obtain the research book in Gunthak, you have to have at least a 101 skill in research before the npc (forgot his name) will give you your book.
Just for general info. :P

Thanks. Been so long since I was "just" 101 that I did not realize it.

Despite of what the general opinion on this quest is, I still think it's worth something. It just takes time and effort, things which some people just aren't willing to give. I am new to this game and my goal is not to reach level 65 as fast as possible.. my goal is to enjoy each and every aspect of this game thoroughly. As far as expense, I can't really comment on how much the higher level practice runes will cost to make, since I am only level 27 now. If the costs go up, I'll probably stop doing it, but, tell me, how then do you get your research skill up? I couldn't understand some of the posts, due to spelling and cryptic acronyms. Try to be a little more clear for us newbies :).
Azreaelle: High Hold Keep is where I found Raw Hide Armor, yes. But I had to go there with an alternate character (human) and had to invis for part of the trip to avoid the orcs outside the city. It's not an easy trip.. if you have a druid friend (like I do), it helps immensely. I also found it randomly on vendors in PoK, and in the Bazaar.

what most people are refering to is the points that you gain everytime you level these are skill points, all you do to use them is talk to a necro guild master and train (ie. put those training/skill points into research) also make sure you have some plat on you cause they cost money everytime you train a point (at lower skill lvls its only a few silver/gold but it goes up eash point). I did a bunch more last night and I am now at 110 in research and at that point it will cost 10p to buy the next point.

I can understand using training points at high levels, as is the case with most skills. I know that getting 5 points in Piercing at level 20 takes about 30 minutes, and it can take hours at level 50. However, why would you use your points at low levels, when you can gather the ingredients so cheaply? Plus, I learned so much while I was out there gathering.. I learned how to manuever through different zones, I learned where I could safely go, what types of mobs were in different areas, what type of people hunted in different areas, I could go on and on.. I'd say that the experience of training is so valuable, I don't understand why people would want to skip over it. Plus, when I get a successful combine with my words, I feel like I've really accomplished something.
I'm not trying to dis anyone here, it is the last thing I want to do. All I'm saying is, that if a person wants to spend their time doing this quest, they should be able to do so (and find help on this board) without having people tell them what a waste of time it is. Let people do the quest and find out if it's something they want to do, then they can decide if it's worth their time or not. We should all be supporting each other, right?

I agree with you! Which ever way that you feel is benificial in learning any skill, is the correct way for any individual. ;) ;)
The way I increased my skill in research, was by combines of words. I am lucky in that I am in a great family type guild. Plus i'm the only necro, (which helps) so I asked the guild members to save all the words that they looted for me. :)
This helped me tremendously in research (need plenty of room in your bank though, or make a mule.) up to about level 120, then due to the lack of sufficient words I went the training method.
I now have mastered the art of research,(200) plus I have a 5% gearlock.
So I can now combine most high level spells for my guild (call it a big thankyou) or, for anyone else for that matter. ;)
I love to help people what can I say!! :) :)
Sorry I ramble. In short "Which ever way is the most comfortable and enjoyable is always the best!!" :P :P

Thanks Cthula! I will keep looking for the rawhide. I'd like to use my xp points for things other than research. Particularly since I neglected to train anything other than piercing and I just got a great two handed staff.. :D
Also, like Blacklotis, I have been combining words as well to raise my skill, even if I already have the spell.
So to all that are scouring for words and combining: Happy Researching!
