I have been experiencing a few interesting things with spell resists and so I pose a question to you all:

Is there a resist modifier for proximity to a target?

The reason I post this is that over the last few weeks in LDoN I have noticed a considerable difference in the number of resists that I have depending on where I am position in relation to my target. This is my first caster character over 40 so I am still learning the ropes a bit but here goes:

For screeming terror, with a charisma of 139 (not great but definitely not terrible), I cannot land it if I am not in melee range. It just doesn't stick. Once in melee range for trash mobs it will stick 7/8 times.

For dooming darkness, on LDoN - Tak mobs it is resisted about 2/3 times if I am outside of melee range - if I am inside melee range it will only be resisted 1/5 times or so.

And to further my paranoia about casting distances, I find that I almost never get resisted if I am standing inside the mob (ie. as close as you can get) for either dooming darkness or screeming terror - to the point that if I start casting at an arm's length of a distance from the mob, I can almost taste the resist incoming in my mouth.

Now normal trash mobs outside of Tak (where I have noticed the biggest problem with resists so far) like OT and Echo I don't really notice a difference as they don't tend to resist much of anything. So I figure Tak's mobs have a slightly higher resistance but why is the proximity to the target such a determining factor in my resist rate?

Thanks!

There has always been a class of critters that require you to be in melee range to land a resistable spell. Generally, these have been dragons, their giant guardians (in Permafrost and Solusek B), and later "boss mobs."

This has been carried over to some later content. Some friends and I were just discussing dungeon resists, as they were noticing similar things to you.

First off, from a dev's reply on Monkly Business, it seems that hard LDoN mobs have a second check against lulls, mezzes, and mem blurs. Anecdotal evidence indicates that if we're within melee range, they don't seem to get this second check. It's quite possible that while the Hard mobs get a 2nd check with a bonus, the Normal dungeon mobs simply get just a second check.

Outside of dungeons and a few notable mobs, proximity's never really changed resists much that I've noticed.

Fizzle's right for the boss mobs. For Innoruuk for example you have to be toe to toe for anything to land on him. Run up, cast your spell, then pray to Inny you can get out of there before he goes on a rampage:)

As for the LDoN mobs -I've never noticed their resists being that much higher than any other mobs. Embrassing Darkness was one of the last 61+ spells I got and I would say mobs in the planes and the 63+ dungeons are very resistant to dooming darkness. I did a hard Tak once where I was the snarer and dd got resisted almost 3 times per mob. But once I got ED this ceased being a problem, especially if you have a debuffer in your group. For LDoN's and expeditions ED gets resisted very rarely with a debuffer. Without one maybe one out of every ten mobs or so might resist (honestly I can't say that for expe's though cos I don't think I've ever done one without a shammy).

So in conclusion I can't really say as I've noticed in higher resisists on LDoN mobs that I would on most planar mobs. The resist rates seem to be about the same if not higher for PoP mobs. I can think of one of those golems in PoV I had a hell of a time soloing. He resisted ED four times in a row! I've never seen that in an adv.

I was aware of certain mobs being flagged that you had to be in melee range to land a spell on them, but these are normal Tak mobs (not even Hard) at about lvl 45. I didn't have problems with other dungeons so I just figured Tak mobs had a higher resist, but the difference in proximity is incredible.

What you say just confirms my suspicions about higher resists (ala a second check) but I wouldn't have expected it on non-named trash mobs at the mid level game. But agaiin the only place that I have seen great evidence of this for me so far has been Tak and it just might be special to that dungeon.

Thanks for your ponderings.

There are several of those in the plane of Hate also, I stand on their backs and cast. The drakes and the Golumns (sorry bad speller here). I've not really noticed it in LDON unless I'm doing HARD, but didn't note the kinds of creatures.
