I probably shouldnt say this he he, but there is a way for you to make serius plat at 44. You can start farming:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/equipment/fpics/bag_of_sewn_evil_eye.jpg
By camping it then porting to pok and putting it in shared bank and then turning one in for a token. You can basically keep the token for when you get sick of farming it and sell them 2 at a time.
REMEMBER YOU ARE KOS TO THE FROGGYS SO GATHER SHADOWS IS A MUST !!
here is where you go:

When u zone into lower guk live side you go
http://www.iownjoo.com/freeimghost/paalrh/lguklive.jpg
Note:but be careful the evil eye sees trough invis. and having a ok magic resistance is ok cuss he nukes pretty good bein ga wizard and all. Just send in 44 pet with pet focus spell and then dooming darkness root and when it gets to about 40 -50% nuke it with incinerate bones.

at 44 I'd run and kill the Geo's in Crystal Caverns. They are an easy solo at lvl 44 and great exp. The cash and gem drops off the semi-common named can be close to 600-800p /hr.

Don't get bent, its not worth it... Heres some exploring tips.
After you zone into a new area, Hit your who button. This tells you approximate lvl of hunters there as well as how busy zone is.
Travel Invis, come away from zone line defensively. Con any and all mobs you see. Notice if they see through invis first off, then determine LvL's.
Rely on past Killing Experiances, Some mobs will always attack. Example, Skeletons. Some zones they get quite powerful.
When I'm exploring, My spell set includes; invis, invis vs. undead, feign death, gate, harmshield (keep it refreshed), fear, screaming terror, track corpse....
Have the new school list of maps updated current, EQToolbox.com.... Old school was EQatlas.com (still a good source of beastiary LvL's).
Be wary of all NPC's. Some will always be amiable, others want your heart ripped out. When New to a town, always con . Next time remember your experiances.
Guards in a city are Guards, for AND against you. Con from a Distance.
Exploring is what made Everquest the Coolest Game going, Have fun with it. If Going from point A to B is your thing, Enjoy that as well.......

** Off Topic **
Whispers Quietly:
It's both sad, and funny, that you posted as you did. Why? PoK books /sigh... a blessing and a curse.
I remember when... (** flash back and looks over to the Nostalgia post **) we actually had to run places, and ride boats, etc. Most of the people you met, then, knew how to get to places, how to travel and explore, etc.
Your response was funny to me in that these days I constantly see people /ooc'ing in PoK:
/ooc Paying 100p for port to Stonebrunt.
/ooc Paying 100p for port to DSP.
Etc and so forth.
It seems ironic that as our proverbial pockets have gotten deeper, people have lost their sense of how to get from Point A to Point B and posts like yours are warranted.
/shrug
No harm or foul intended to anyone herein. My remarks were simply an amusing look at how things have changed over the years.
As to the original post and point... Whispers Quietly is on to something =).
Try Gulf of Gunthak. If you go to the area below the steps (near Nadox zone, not the lava zone, but the castle-looking one), the mushrooms and drogmors are dark blue to you and are very sweet xps per kill. There are guards on the steps that are more xp per kill, but take a little more effort and mana to solo. You should be able to get a few levels quickly and easily there, and there is a lot of room to fear kite.

Here are some solo ideas from kunark and the old world:
Nurga: clear the tier 1 goblins in the entrance area (maybe 12-15 spawns total)... smartly-done pulls *should* come single due to fairly low aggro radius but keep FD loaded just in case. Start off with root-rot and pet-tanking. Once the two in the pool, two up the ramp, and the roamer are clear, then you can use that hallway to fear-kite the ones you pull from the next area. Save the salts and skins to sel in Bazaar or turn in to NPC at chardok entrance for faction.
Burning Woods: Undead ruins southeast of giant fort... area west of ruins is free of roamers, skeletons pull single but apes are social, great xp at your lvl, occasional lvl 51+ spell drops... either pet tank with undead slow or fear-kite in the roamer-free area west of the ruins, your choice
Butcherblock: Dwarf citizens, several camps, decent xp at the good ones... fear-kite them
Ocean of Tears: Spectres... clear the gargoyles until they are gone and only skeletons are roaming. Soothe pull or FD pull each of the 4 specs at the top of the isle. Pet tank w/slow or fear kite. Or aggro kite, whatever.
Oasis: Spectres, same story different zone.
Ferrott: Spectres again...
Qeynos sewers: Spectres again... with a Bloodsabres faction hit though
When my necro was 44-49 I mainly hunted Nurga and the undead ruins in BW. Both were very fast xp (1.5 yellow bubbles per hour or so) and decent loot. Two named in Nurga tier 1 area drop decent sellable items. Dreadlands, Eastern Wastes, Great Divide, and other zones are out there and should provide good fodder for a necro your level. There are a lot of zones in the game now, more than I have knowledge of, and I would suggest that you explore some of them. Even though I played the game heavily back during the old-world and kunark eras, and know those zones fairly well, I have found that zone revamps and new MOBs have altered zones that I was originally familiar with... sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
From 49-53 I continued to kill in Burning Woods and Nurga as well as zones such as Skyfire, Scarlet Desert, Trak Teeth, Twilight Sea, City of Mist, Ocean of Tears, Lower Guk, etc. I find that clearing dock people in Twilight Sea (3 MOBs per dock, plus 3 (2 dwarfs + 1 halfling) from the house, plus 4 from the Katta entrance = 13 MOBs) is pretty nice xp at 52-53 but yields zero loot. Sun Revenants/Reavers in SD are decent XP and undead that can be pet-tanked or fear-kited. Aggro and yo-yo kiting Elder Wyverns, Mature Wurms, Old Wurms, etc. in Skyfire is also good xp and decent loot. Seafuries in OOT are good xp up until 52 or so when they start going light-blue. Spectrals in Trak Teeth are decent xp around 49-50 and start going LB around 51.
As mentioned in other posts, Ykesha zones are supposed to be really sweet xp and loot especially for your level. I haven't hunted there much personally, but they certainly look good on paper. Between those ideas and these, that should keep you busy for the next 10 levels. Hope that helps...

One of the things to remember is that as a necro you don't need buffs and supplies as much as others. I stock up high on food and water. I don't use a horse/drog. I bind close to my hunting grounds. This allows me to stay away from the pok books for a long time.
I don't need KEI every 1.5 hours.
I don't need Temp/Virtue.
I carry SoW potions.
Thats it. As a necro I can stay far away from civilization for a week/two weeks easily. Hunt in the places as far from PoK as possible when you are young/middle aged. It makes everything interesting and you learn how far you can push things. It makes the travel less time consuming as well. It is an investment that you want to recoup by spending as long as possible from pok.

I'm 45 now and hunting in Dulak, drops are nice with gems and pp and other stuff to sell.
I hunted the PlagueBone skelks in DL but found them a little slow but still not bad exp.
I been reading up on the Scarlet Desert and think I'm going to go look into that in the next couple of days.
Now to address Whispers Quietly's post
I left EQ a week after Luclin came out and never bought that expansion so the best one I hade played up to that time was SoV. I used to love sitting on the boats learning new Langauges and BSing with everyone waiting to get on the boat.
I'll admit I was a ***cough*** Druid ***cough*** but I still loved running and exploring and alot of times I ran or took a boat instead of porting myself because I loved exploring. I died alot due to some of my adventures but I had fun and that is what EQ is about for me.
PoK has taken some of the fun and adventure out of the game for newer players that have never had to Run thru Kith at night and then sneak/hide thru Highpass Hold to get to E Karana at lv 10 :D
Getting long winded remembering this stuff so yes PoK sucks but it does have it's uses.

I been reading up on the Scarlet Desert and think I'm going to go look into that in the next couple of days.
SD used to be a nice leveling spot. The past few days, I've made it a point to run through, mostly checking for named mobs, and it's been a ghost-zone... not a player in sight.

SD is usually vacant on my server as well. When there is someone there, they are killing the aliens on the plateau near the revenant camp. Only once did I log in and find another group killing revenants there. I don't think it's empty because it isn't a good xp spot anymore, though. It's just that fewer players are in the lvl 50-60 range and there are now spots like Dulak for them to hunt. Same with dock people in twilight sea... my lvl 53 necro can do about 1.5 yellow AAXP per hour there, which seems pretty good... yet it's never camped. So I'm going to use that camp to get RS3 before I start leveling him again.
I sometimes 2-box my necro wth my druid currently lvl 56, either grouped or using him as a buff bot. After I get RS3 for the necro, then I'm going to get lvl 57 on the druid for succor, then take both characters to Nadox to see what that zone is all about. I read good things about xp in part of that zone which can be reached via succor/egress/levant.
I've never been one to be embarrassed about playing a druid. When I play that character, I don't drag my quad kites over other peoples camps, KS rares from newbies, or the various other things people complain about regarding druids. Who cares about other players applying silly stereotypes to my character based on what class he is.
Even though I can port my characters wherever they need to go, I still find PoK to be a nice convenience. I also left the game, once during Kunark, then came back during Velious and left again about the time Luclin was released. Obviously everything having to do with AAXP is new to me as are a lot of new zones. So I have had a learning curve to deal with, but yes it does surprise me the ignorance displayed (of EQ geography and other aspects of the game) by some players in the lvl 50+ range.
I played on a PvP server previously, so knowledge of zones and their connections was critical to my success. You explored to find good xp spots that were not vulnerable to ambush, and conversely to find spots where your enemies xp that were vulnerable to ambush. Where could you catch a guy OOM in PvE gear with his pants down, how long from the time you enter the zone until the time you were attacking him, for him to see you on /who or tracking to run away and prepare for a fight. You learned which hidey-holes were good spots to med up between PvP fights. And so forth. This type of play required a much higher level of attention and time spent to be successful. Now I'm married and have a baby in the house so I don't have that time anymore... so I did a geared xfer to a non-PvP server and now I can be lazy and inattentive. In these empty zones, with fast xp and nobody trying to kill me, I get fast xp with low risk and can go AFK and not come back to find myself naked at my bindpoint... nowadays it's like "easy mode" compared to my previous EQ experience.

Just as an FYI ...
You can get to the same spot by travelling:
Gunthak -> Dulak -> Torg -> Nadox
It's a few minutes longer and you'll need an invis, but it's a nice alternative for those without succor or a succoring partner, especially if you don't want to take a lava bath and have to deal with the elementals et al =).
