Sorry i am really a newbie, Do you add that to a hotkey by right click on it, or do you type that in the chat window?

What i would do is do it on the chat window. I usually do that. But you can make it a hotkey. You choose ;)

IMHO its easier to make the hotkey...
because to type it in the chat box you'd have to use keyboard anyways so why not just press 1 number button instead of typing all that crap heh

Programming it on the number one key sounds like a good idea. How do go about programming it?

ok heres what you do...
go to the actions window (bring it up by clicking the swords button on the windo selector)
go to the little work bubble and find a blank button on the second page of buttons
click and hold on a blank button until it is on your cursor
bring it over to your hotkeys and if you want it to be for the 1 button then you put it in the first hotkey slot (i.e the top left)
now right click on the blank button to bring up its options and to program it
title the button whatever you want it to be (such as Assist or the popular Ass)
on the first line type in /Assist *tank's name* without the *.. now whenever you join or start a group, decide who the main tank or puller will be and update the key by putting in their name
if you want to make things even easier you can add /pet attack to make your pet go after the mob too... and even cast a spell if you wish with /cast 1-8... 1 being the top spell on your spells window and 8 being the bottom one...
experiment with your hotkeys and make a bunch of them to see what you like... its a fun part of everquest and can make some things easier... GL guys

/assist MT
/pet kill
is not the best option in my eye's
when you have other mob in target sometimes pet attack it befor target switch to assist target. When i lagged it was happen sometimes.
i have

I don't like fussing with hotkeys, and changing the MT name every time i switch groups. What I do is I use the F# keys to select the group member who is tanking, then use the /assist hotkey i made and then use the /pet attack hotkey as well.
Yes that's 3 button presses instead of 1, and 2 hotkeys instead of 1. Why would you do this? Here is my reasoning, agree/disaggree whatever I don't realy care cause I'm stubborn:
1. I'm lazy and don't wanna change MT name every time.
2. What if you need to assist another group member. Good to have just an assist key instead of a assist mt key. Say you need to assist the secondary tank.
3. What if you don't want your pet to attack for some reason while you're assisting. Say you're assisting off the puller and he isn't at pull point yet and you wanna start casting before mob gets to camp and you don't want pet to run out and prevent MoB from making it all the way back.
Exceptions: During raids always make an assist MT key, the tank may not be in your group. Also, it's a good idea to make an assist Secondary tank key.

to change name take 5 sec, to click assist key and then pet attack is much more work then change 1x name of MT =)

One thing not metioned is having a pet hotkey up too.. Why you ask when you have the pet menu?
Well, because in the heat of battle and the confusion of a crowded screen, trying to either click your pet menu, or your pet, and switching back and forth between him and the enemy, you can waste time.
If you use hotkey 1 as your MT assist hotkey, and 2 as your pet assist key, you can switch back and forth effortless. You can also setup a hotkey that does this
/target <name of pet here>
/pause 2
/cast <number of shadowbond gem here>
and essentially, target and slap shadowbond on him in one step.
Then on your Pet Assist hotley you can just type
/assist <pet name>
Now you can switch back and forth between your pet and the enemy and heal and dot as you will with ease.

I have 2 assist keys one is for the mt and the other is for the healer.. why the healer? pretty obvious if the healer is getting attacked and yells for help I hit that button and either cast root or screaming terror.. I have saved the healer many times doing this..

Good point about the healer in the group. Might want two hotkeys actually, one tied to shadowbond and the other to what is after him.

Let me step in this one...
Mine is setup like this:
/Assist BOB
/g Assisting BOB in killing of a %t
/pause 5
/stand up
I am always sitting between melees, like any good caster, and want to be able to cast. I NEVER automatically send a pet. I want to get the mob targetted first and make sure the freaking puller/tank has not gone of and swapped mobs on me. I find that pullers that snare are teh WORST about switching mobs on you. They snare one and another gets there quicker and yo nuke the snared one to have it come after you as BOB has switched to the fast one. (I hate it when I have to train pullers).
I put /pet attack on a different hotkey.
Now this is a preference thing. I prefer to get the mob targetted and be ready to cast faster than many. A lot of people are fine with doing nothing until teh Tank has full agro and is calling for assist. That is valid as well. Though I still cannot reccomend the Assist being setup with the /Pet Attack. Out of control pets are dangerous.
