Swatches aren't brought up often as a route to skill-up in research. For one thing, the components can be a bit rare. For another, the end market is a bit confusing to non-tradeskillers. The one attractive bit to doing swatches however is that they require only one component, rather than two, to make... and if you manage to make any of the ones using rarer components, they actually can bring in a nice bit of pp in the bazaar, providing you have the patience to sell them.

Since you can no longer buy your way up in research, some people may be happy to have another route besides just spells. Here's a list of the components used to make swatches, the trivial of the combine, the name of the swatch made, and the race that uses them for their cultural robe tailoring (anybody can make the swatches, the race is just to help you if you decide to sell them in the bazaar). The robes (using LoY ribbons) are a popular route for tailors to skill up.

To make a swatch, combine the component, a quill and a piece of parchment in your Warlock's Book of Binding (must have level 101 in research to do these).

Can anyone make the swatches, regardless of race?

They should be able to, since the "cultural" robes (which the swatches are used for) are only limited to race by teh ability to get the final robe pattern (ie. on FV you can get the robe patter from a player of another race and do the combine). Could be wrong, but since they don't have the "race-flag" set for the end robes, I doubt the "race-flag" is set for the swatches.

This seems so much eaiser than making those practice runes.. I will try it tonight!

The swatches are in no way race restricted. I have made many that are for other Race's cultural robes.

The Robes.. hrm.. while the patterns are tradeable on FV, the recipes say they are race restricted. For example, Robe of Misery:

Tailoring Components: cabilisan needle, cabilisan robe pattern, misery scried swatch, platinum brown ribbon
In: deluxe sewing kit, large sewing kit, loom, tanaan loom, collapsible sewing kit
Yield: 1
Also Returns: cabilisan needle
On Failure Returns: cabilisan needle
This combine may only be made by Iksar
Trivial at: 262

Most cultural recipes are tied to race.. even illusions will not fool them. But, I have not tried this.

Ok I am having problems getting the Warlock book....

I looked it up on alla and see that you speak to this researcher in gunthak, ok I did that, but the guy won;t give me anything. He says "come back when you are more knowledgeble in this subject"

Anyone else have this problem?

To get the book you need to be "over 100" in Research.

According to EQTraders, Swatches can only be made in the LoY Books (ie: once your Research is over 100).

I do not have my old book (I mean, why keep it when you have this new 10 slot one) so I am really not sure if you can make swatches in them or not.

Hrm.. further searching finds in Alla: "Notes: Combine in the class-specific advanced research book you get from Researcher Alvarik in Gunthak."

I've been looking and have never seen any of these for sale in the Bazaar. Hmm. Maybe I just keep missing them.

I found that ones I made sold better than the words.. even if priced slightly higher.

Tailoring is a super expensive tradeskill.. and since the swatch combines are restricted to INT casters with >100 Research.. there are a great many tailors that could not directly make the swatches.. yet could make cultural robes.

I can confirm that anyone can make the swatches, as long as you've got your "new" (over 100) book. Swatches were my primary skill up combines from 100 to .... well, at least into the 130's or 140's.

Some will resell well in the bazaar, but generally those that do use a pretty expensive component to begin with. They are worth a bit to NPC vendors, too. So you can recoup some of the cost of the rune/word/whatever.

Not an often-used skill-up, but it was easy for me to vendor-hunt swatch-usable runes and words in PoK or elsewhere when I was skilling up past 100.
