Mythiran Tower (http://mythiran.allakhazam.com/) has excellent information for the neophyte researcher.
Caster's Realm (http://eq.crgaming.com/menu/research.asp) has pretty much the same information, but in a slightly different format.

Just make sure you stick with it unless you like spending 20k on spells you can research for under 500pp when you get in the 50's.
Cheonna, research is not a necessity, but it does have it's benefits. Many necromancers never research, but find other necro's to do their combines for them. If you decide to persue research, know that it is an all or nothing kind of thing if you intend to really reap the rewards of research. Everytime you hit a new level, you obtain 5 more training points...spend them on research. When you get cheap or free words, do combines whether you need to or not for skill ups. Do not attempt combines for spells that are several levels above yours. There is a cap and quill you usually find for sale in the bazaar that increases your research ability by about 5% each, buy these when you can. By the time you get the skill to 200, you probably won't require the skill for yourself any longer, but you can make a nice little profit buying words in the bazaar, doing the combines, and then selling the spells. One last word of advise, when you finally get your hands on hard to find or expensive words, and your research level is questionable, do a /who necromancer 60 65 and locate someone max'ed to do the combine for you :)

Unless it's been changed recently skill focus items such as the Thought Horror Scalp (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=7490) and the Geerlok Automated Quill (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=20138) don't stack skill bonuses. Either one will give you a 5% bonus.

Bare in mind that unless you can find the words to combine yourself, while hunting or from friends who will give them to you, you may find the words you need are sold in the Bazaar for more than the spells themselves. Or the words are almost the price of the spell, and you risk failing to make the spell even with 200 skill and the modifier.
I did save some money making some spells, but it appears I must buy most of my level 60 spells as the rare words for each spell go for up to 8k or 12k on my server (Eci). Torment and Holding for example.
Yep, it is a risk :) I had 20K in the bank, bought 2 words of Torment for 10K each, figuring I'd make 2 Funeral Pyre's and sell one for a profit.....first combine succeeded and second failed. My only consolation is that I did get my spell, which would have cost me over 20K had I bought it out right in the first place......my research is at 196. Now I am broke again ! This is just like RL :P
btw - you think it makes any diff if you have KEI when attempting combine ?

Most lvl 49 and below spells words are easy to come by in LDON. (The only ones I have trouble with are agony and asylum)
Also they can be found on vendors fairly frequently.
If you have the words most high level necros will do the combines cheaply (even free).
If you are on FV look up Sasiz, I will do comibnes for free.

KEI will help your chances of getting an improve if your int is not already maxed, it won't help your chances of success :(

I have a 200 research skill...did it the hard way, through practice runes and combines.
I have a Thought Horror Scalp an Geerlok Quill and use them both when combining whether it helps or not.
When skilling-up, I always had my INT as high as it could go....even if it meant keeping gear around just for the practice....items I generally wouldn't wear or carry.
Because of the penalty applied at the beginning, just save up components and practice rune components till level 20, then dump some points into with your Guildmaster. Start research at level 20+...you can skill-up at that level...16-19 is just a waste of effort.
Visit this link for some good printable pages of components: http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_...tr=080105000000 (http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g83&menustr=080105000000)
If you are in a Guild, ask for their assistance in obtaining research and practice rune components...I did and to date I have made spells worth over 250K total bazaar value which I have donated to the Guild.....and that doesn't include the ones I sell myself.....sort of a 60-40 split. One Word of Redemption sells for 50k on the Torv server and I made one last November (Lucky Cleric).
Good Luck....Though I am one of 4 (200) researchers in my Guild, I am usually the one everyone calls when they need a spell, my combines almost never fail.

I need to add a note on the spells that are lord and the spells that are no drop to this document, but it cross refernces several EQ sites and almost all of it has been confirmed in game. I hope this helps.
Necro Spell research (http://home.ripway.com/2003-12/48207/necro%20info/Necrospellresearch.doc)
I put in any thing about necro spells from research to spell drops to word drops. Its based on information posted on this website I've seen over time and what I and other necro's I know on Quel have done.
If anyone finds something they would like added to the document please let me know.

NeSikWay,
Nice list...could have used it long ago.....btw, Agony is a confirmed drop in Mon Letalis off the Ancient Rockhopper.....not unusual when you consider the level of spell it makes.

Necro Spell Research Infomation (http://home.ripway.com/2003-12/48207/necro%20info/Necrospellresearch.doc)
this includes spell research information (not the practice stuff) for all necro spells.
I've included small charts on summon corpses, regen information (partially unconfirmed).
It includes NPC drops, word drops and lvls, includes pet information and LDON spell, notes on which spells are confirmed research and lore.
Let me know if you have any other information you would like me to add to this.
