Has anyone ever failed or heard of others failing the research combines in the Ikkinz 4 raid? One of the other Necs in my guild is at like 250 and has the VT robe and AA and everything, but when he didn't show last night I was the go to guy.

I successfully made the 2 combines with a 177 in research and a geerlock to augment that (I also spent 3 of my saved AA on the first rank of Arcane Tongues to be safe <_< ). What I am wondering is, should I continue trying to raise my research skill in case research boy doesn't make it again, or is the skill I have adequate to ensure success on these combines for future runs? Anyone ever watched someone fail it or know the trivials?

I'm fairly certain it is a no fail combine. We've never had anyone fail it.

I think there's a minimum required skill but that's all... really don't know for sure though.

Hmmm I thought you had to be 200 for the combine.

I was thinking that would be the case. But when I read back over the strat it just said a researcher with "high" skill, no actual number.

I have friends in other guilds who've done it with 180-190 research, and never failed. After the training point nerf, getting to 200 with the old system was bad from what I hear (I used training points after getting to like 160 or so legitimately ;)). Nowadays, getting to 243 isn't hard, just expensive. Beyond that, the system still isn't as bad (component-wise) as the old system.

Now that Research is no longer the backwater tradeskill, I think a recipe like Grandmaster Researcher's Quill isn't out of line to add. Look at the other race/class specific tradeskills, they have GM trophys, research should receive a similar item.

Yeah I used my trainer to get to 177, which is where I sit atm lol. The combines went fine, and I have not heard of anyone failing it in my various inquiries, so 177 will have to remain "good enough," hehe. Thanks for the input everyone.

Yeah skilling to 200+ the hard way before dod was a pita, with dod and the patch that increased drop rates it got much much better though, but it will cost you a pretty penny and some carple tunnel perhaps with all the damn subcombines.
