Was looking on allakhazam for anything worth while and found Scythe of Eternal Ice. It's only 1k and was wondering if anyone thinks it would be any good for my lv.5nec pet.

It has a reccomended lv of 35
Charisma+5 Int+6 Hp+20 Mana+20 SV Poision +9 and it has a nice proc

You would do better to find the nearest large hole in the ground and drop it in it. Or give 1kpp to the nearest noob who asks for it...once you log for more than 30 minutes your pet goes pop and so does the scythe. But if pp is not an issue go for it.

honestly just get a rusty 2 hander until your pet hits lvl 10 (at that lvl should be your pet spell around that lvl) then find a mage or trader who has a fist of whatever its called... procs at lvl 10 for a nice bit of dmg, and has decent stats. Worse case it would run ya about 10pp, so get a few and some other summoned gear for now. Full suite of phantom plate, a girdle or belt, a muzzle, a fist, an elemental defender, and if you want a full set of summoned focus items (minus the 2 bracers unless you dont give the pet the plate bracers) should give you a really nice pet ready to tank your foes.

There are a number of tricks to keep a pet for quite a long time, but it's probably not worth it.

Edit - And I'm not sure if our pets can equip sk only weapons.

Once I've got a pet that is all decked out, I usually just park in the Bazaar when I'm not actively playing, so I get to keep DaBoner for the next time I'm on. Well, I park him there when I'm not in Iraq, LOL.

I've had this discussion a few times with folks in various threads.

If the goal is to equip your pet to the utmost he can handle, there's a guide at http://www.necrotalk.com/index.php?showtopic=852&st=60. It's one of the sticky threads atop this forum. On page five, I list a full set of equipment you can give your pet, if the desire is to make him into a mob blender. Most times, this is overkill, but if you need everything he can give you, that's how you get it.

Please note the disclaimers regarding pet tanking not being viable at level 70 in non-trivial content. Learn to kite, young one, or face the pain later and regret it.

I'm too lazy to look stuff up, right now. BUT, I know there is a discussion on this site about pets using weapons, regardless of pet "class" and weapon "class" limitations. Some of this was nerfed though, but I don't know what was and wasn't. People were equiping pets with shaman only weapons and slowing unslowable mobs, etc.

personally I am too cheap and lazy to bother with even loading my better pet buff glyph of darkness so Jebobar is born gets clicky pants and dies at pretty much same level he came in at.

I actually agree. The pet is just an added bonus of being an extremely, EXTREMELEY mana efficient dot. If you can only solo via your pet I strongly suggest you learn the ropes really fast.

Pets not good tanks?

I use my pet to tank for my group and he works well. I have nec (me), cleric, beastlord, sk, and wiz. Somehow my pet takes all the dmg, so he must be drawing all the aggro from the mob?
I pull and then fd sometimes, and then everyone bashes till its hp is low then wiz finishes. Sometimes the mob switches and hits the sk or war but most of the time my pet gets murdered (which is mainly who the cleric heals). Some people might say this tactic is stupid but it works awesome for me.

So is my pet the MT is this situation?

Sometimes my pet gets aggro.. and rarely lasts 10 seconds. Even with the mob slowed and my 70 cleric having dropped his best Heal over Time and chaining the best Quick Heal he has.

I more everynight scenario is: the mob hits the pet for one round, then has blood aggro from the pet being almost dead and stays locked on for the second round. Total time.. a few seconds.

Yes, my 67 Lost Soul can tank in Bastion of Thunder as well as a Ornate wearing 65 Warrior.. so can I in silk and I get very little experience from it.. even alone.

Get over it, if you want to pet tank, reroll Mage or Beastlord.

Lost Soul (Level 67 pet) with Minion of Eternity (Time level) focus has maybe 8.5k hp and maybe 1.5k ac. He has no mitigation or avoidance AAs or Shielding or Avoidance. Content past PoP was heavily designed with the mind that you're going to have a warrior tanking. Wars have the best mitigation, access to all the defensive AAs, armor which improves upon it even more, and a number of discs that help as well.

If your pet can tank in MPG, RSS, the Nest, or any place that gives a decent amount of exp, and still maintain a fast killing rate, this means several things:

Your melee are the Gods of Positioning. They can dance in that small area of the hit box where they can still hit the mob, but aren't close enough for the mob to turn to face them instead of the pet, like every mob in the game is hard coded to do if a player gets too close.

Your cleric's mana pool approaches the limit of infinity and his spell haste approaches the limit of zero.

You are using a pet focus called "Minion of the Dev" which actually summons a player that roleplays a pet.


What Feli means when she says that pet tanking is the least scalable killing method in the game, is that as you gain levels and must kill higher level content to receive the same amount of exp, your pet becomes less of a tank and more of a cute toy.

If you have an SK and a warrior in the group 1 of them should be the MT. It'll save the cleric alot more mana and be alot more efficient and its their job to boot. And after level 15 or so if you try to make the pet MT either the cleric will spend time you could be XPing medding or the pet will be dieing alot.

If your pet can tank that better than I did, then I'm changing mains to my sk heh. Also, bear in mind at the time of this log, my necro still tanked slightly better than my sk, main reason I chose to let the necro tank. :P

I'm still trying to figure out how if you have a beastlord, sk, and war (not listed in group list, but mentioned later), how your pet would be taking damage. Pet will always, always, always attack a PC in melee range over a pet from my experience. So unless the beast and sk are just casting, one of them should get hit. I can see the beastlord's pet getting agro over yours, as with their proc buffs increasing their dps, as well as some of them having +hate effects, it could grab agro easy. No levels were provided for this group, though.

Basically, unless they are almost totally naked, any tank class (war, pal, sk, and yes even ranger) should be able to tank better than our 67 pet. Also, mage air pet would tank better also (I'm not sure where beast pet would compare, as most hp buffs on the beast pet should be available to necro pet if they are grouped I think).

And I am now convinced Xelgadis's awesome abilites all came from banshee aura. :huh: This spell will now be in my spell lineup permantly!

That and the observation that Xelgadis plays even later than I do.. which is saying something.

At the time, his SK was still a baby. Xelgadis had more hitpoints, avoidance and likely mitigation and maybe even better AC (at the time)(and we have better lifetaps to patch heal ourselves). Now Xelinia is CD tagged as well. It would be a coast, today.

I tried a Barindu named with a Lost Soul (Minion of Eternity focused, Convictioned, mob slowed and my 70 Cleric heal over time + quick heals). Fight lasted < 20 seconds. Later did it with our 70 SK friend.. and we told jokes during.

"scaling" Hrm.. I guess I mean, Kiting scales. Yes, stuff hits harder.. but it does not hit you (much.. and you have more HP, more avoidance, etc). Yes it has more HPs, but you spells do more. Kiting works at level 30, and works just as well at level 70 against red con mobs. It scales up with content.

Root rot, same.

Pet tanking.. the mobs do WAY more damage compared to the increases in pet HP and mitigation.

And.. kinda tangentally.. slow is capped at the same 70/75% it was in PoP (or Luclin?).. but most mobs mitigate slow. Many mitigate slow A LOT. So.. stuff hits faster and for much more. Most recent mobs are low ATK.. they hit for less than max often on well geared Plate tanks. Which we are not, and our Pets are not.

Our Pets have not scaled as tanks as compared to content and "real" player tanks.

Shaman pet = dogdot.. our pet should be "noisydot", or something. I hold it until aggro is set, or I knowingly sacrifice it.

I wasn't using the spell, actually. The DS spam was from the 9th Coldain ring and a +5 worn DS mod.
