So, I was running around Nektulos last night, trying to kill some halflings(i hate them by the way, with an unholy passion) and trying out some of this fear stuff. It didn't seem to be working very well though.

I tried stacking on my DoTs first and then fearing. Is it just halflings, or do all the mobs book like that when they are feared?

Anyway, I almost feel ashamed to be this much of a noob, but I could really use some pointers on playing the class.

Try snaring (darkness spells) before fearing...then dotting. You still need to make certain their fear path doesn't lead to other "friends" aggroing on you.

Is it just halflings, or do all the mobs book like that when they are feared? All mobs flee at least that fast when feared. SOW-buffed mobs flee faster. Always use darkness in conjunction with fear for mobs you plan to actually be able to kill.

basic necro tactics:

Pull with darkness... sic pet

(Pet will hopefully get aggro if it resists buying you some time)

Once snared Fear, dot dot sit get out the book and watch

now there are audio triggers its even easier...

set "Your Fear spell has worn off" as the trigger

now you can read till it dings at you stand refear sit down again :)

Here's my question...sorry it's off topic...but how do you set "audio triggers"?

One other issue is whether you choose to have pet taunt on or off while fear-kiting. If it's on, then when fear runs out the pet will probably taunt the mob before it reaches you, but if the mob hits hard the pet will die. With pet taunt off odds are the mob will hate you more and come running right for you when fear runs out, but the pet won't get hit and killed.

That's particularly relevant at 50+ when you're kiting mobs that will kill the pet in a couple of melee rounds, though you'd probably be aggro-kiting them anyway. And, admittedly, the level 67 pet tanks better than I do unless I have a ton of mana for lifetaps!

noones ever really managed to confirm or deny this... I always took it to be one of those urban myths like looting corpses speeds up spawn rates! :D

Actually I thought someone tested it and did manage to disprove it. Hrm.... now to remember where I read that several years ago!!!

More to the point, I know I never had a very low charisma on Gnek and he never had a problem landing fear (or fast breaking fears) on mobs that were to be feared... so even if a lower charisma helps fear land or increases the length of fear, does it really make a difference? :D
