is soe and EQ staff scared of what Blizzard is bringing to the table?
Smed: well..let's dodge that question for now - the designers all want to ;)

SoE is shitting their pants with the Beta of WoW lurking over their heads.
all that aside, sounds like GoD is going to be a great xpansion and alot of really good and much needed things are getting added into EQ.
they also said they dont plan on suching down EQ and they are planning to release many more xpansions, Not just 1 more after GoD like the rumors going around.

Yeah, EVERY single time someone puts out a new game someone has to say this. For the last 2 or 3 years. Guess what? SoE knows they have nothing to worry about because most games flop or just don't have the content to keep people away from EQ. Get real, unless WoW does what SW: Galaxy and the half dozen other games that have come out didn't, SoE is going to be sweating it.
Am I a Fanboy? No, I'm a realist that is basing a statement on what I've seen. I'd actually like to see WoW or even City of Heroes smash into the genre (is that the right word?) but I'm doubting it. If it does happen, you can come back and said you told me so. I won't hold my breath waiting though.

Yeah, SoE's biggest threat at the moment is itself: every new expansion introduces new bugs and trivialises more old content... there's a limit to how long they can continue to do that before people just get fed up and bored of more and more XP grinding.

but those other games weren't produced by Blizzard. Now this is blizzards first shot at the mmo area but to this point everything blizzard has done has been golden. If any game being developed can compete with EQ it is WoW.
I agree with you though, with the track record of the games that have been released at this point it looks like WoW will fail, but I dont see that happening.
I hope WoW gets big because if you take a look at the MMO area of games theirs only really 1 game that has been consistance and successful and that is EQ. what is to make companies stop making them altogether if their arent some more release real soon that can generate some serious cash for their creators.
So many games that had great potential were rushed out and became shit, case and point SWG. Blizzard doesnt seem to be making that mistake.

Ok, if there is one company that can contend with SoE its Blizzard. Blizzard is the most successfull video game company ever. Starcraft, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3 were all tremendous hits. I can see why SoE is getting a little nervous...

Yeah blizzard always puts out quality games, at least the ones I got. I never even considered any game like this until I heard blizzard was putting one out. Then my fiancee started playing eq and here I am lol.

It's funny how everyone keeps talking blizzard this and blizzard that but guess what EQ has been the foundation for the majority of these MMORPG games that has come out in the last 3yrs & unless they can add something totally new that we haven't already seen I honestly don't see them making that big an impact as people say.
Due to the fact that EQ has been out for 4yrs + most players are going to be compare what EQ had or has to what currently will be in WoW. Unfortunately we have all been exposed and there is no way to renew that mouth dropping, awe inspiring feeling like we had when we first started playing EQ. Infact when we do see someting new today in EQ we are like " Ok this is cool what's next " or " Ok this is really annoying do we have to hear that bard song ever 6 secs ? "
Anyway it's all left to be seen as many of us already know blizzard developers do play in several of these large guilds we see from server to server giving them an idea of what can be done to improve game play but believe me that "AWESOME !!!! " feeling we got when we began EQ will not be there. Same stuff different models.

If you want to talk about the foundations of MMORPGs, look past EQ. Meridian 59 I think was before it, and that was a graphic version of the MUDs, MUSHes, MOOs, and various other M games that were around decades before EQ. Most of the things in EQ I can look back at various MUDs I played and say, "Yeah, that's almost the same way they did it on X-MUD, glad they didn't use the Y-MUD implementation of it." I'm sure the few things in EQ that I didn't see in MUDs were in MUDs I did not play.
The difference with EQ is that is has a much more general audience than the MUDs, or early graphic versions of MUDs.
Another thing to look at in what WoW can offer that EQ doesn't is, well, the World of Warcraft. It already has a fanbase (different than the Star Wars fanbase, cover that in a moment), and a rich background story that the players may well have participated in, with the previous Warcraft games. So unlike most other MMORPGs, the players will have already played in this world.
The reason WoW will be different that SW:G in the respect is the perspective. Star Wars, in my opinion, was actually not a good choice for a game like this. The movies are based on the actions of a few heros, not hundreds, or thousands. SW works much better as a regular RPG than a massive one. Warcraft, on the other hand, you may have been an unseen leader in the RTS games, but when I played, I would sometimes see myself as the units, and there were quite a few of them running around. The scope of the individual characters is smaller than in SW.
Only time will tell how well WoW will do, but looking at the social aspect of MMORs, I would say WoW has the best chance of surviving.
