Greetings,

Personally, I have no first hand experience at playing or levelling a necromancer. My main is a lvl 58 mage and I have a 30th lvl chanter and a 16th lvl Warrior that I also play. However, the warrior's primary purpose for existing is to play meat shield to my wife's necromancer who has just reached 19th lvl. This much I can say from watching her play her necro for just a little over 4 weeks (bear in mind this is her first and only character and she is learning the game in addition to learning to play one of the more difficult classes. Throw in the fact that because she's a Dark Elf she's pretty much KOS anywhere but Neriak and the Overthere, and I think 19th lvl for a character that doesn't get played much over 2 hours an evening is pretty good). Field of Bone and Kurn's Tower are a low level necromancer's best friend. The experience is good and quick as long as you have mana. Your pet is able to tank most of the critters for you as long as you watch his health and the bone chips just keep rolling in once you're into Kurn's. My wife used to agonize over whether to cast her pet and possibly waste a bone chip which never seemed to drop in the East Commonlands. If she had 8 chips on her while she was hunting newbie zones, she was having a good day. Now she gives bone chips away in stacks to newbie necros. She's gone from 10th to 19th in a grand total of about 20 hours of playing in these two zones. And a great deal of it solo, so, she's using considerable mana. Yeah, yeah, I know, what kind of meat shield am I if she's solo, but, I do have guild committments that require my mage's presence.

As far as I'm concerned, if your primary offensive and defensive skillls require the ability to cast spells, then mana is your first priority. This means boosting either your mana pool directly or, even better, boosting your intelligence. Always bear this in mind, if you're getting hit, as a caster, things have gone terribly wrong. As a caster you have spells specifically for this contingency. As a necomancer, you have one of the best of those spells - FEIGN DEATH. it doesn't need HP to cast. it needs mana and 1.5 seconds when you're not gettng hit.

My 2cp

Be well

HP are important for a necro, mainly due to hp/mana conversion spells, and hp transfer heal-over-time spells.

An efficient necro is hardly ever at full health, if they are actively playing, and doing their job properly. Full health means that you are wasting your hp regen, that could be put towards mana or healing your pet or groupmate etc. Full health means that a lifetap does damage but doesn't give you the other benefit of healing. So, for a necro, full health is bad for efficiency.

So, since you are always running partial health, and the range from full to dangerously low dictates how you will manage that healthbar, you do need to consider HP for your necro.

For necros, it isn't just a matter of how many hits you can take from something before you take a dirt nap, as is the case for mages or wizards etc... it's a matter of managing your resources.

check out this write up, it pretty much sums up a lot of your questions:

leveling necro 1 - 63 in a month (http://www.necrotalk.com/index.php?showtopic=797)

I can give you input from a level 52 necro's point of view:

1. Intelligence is a MUST. Almost everything that you get should have some intell in it. Did I say that INtell is a must for everthing?

2. HP is second. Not AC, Not dex ,but hp. This is because of our ability to drain hp for mana. High HP also works well in defense.

3. Get some items that also have some strength. You don't need a lot. An overall strength of 90 or so would be great. This allows you to carry all those bones and loot that you will get.

4. One of the most underrated things for a necro to do is boost defense skill. I have my defense maxed to 145. This gives you an extra 2.5 points in AC per point of defense.. I have acheived this by actually maleeing with mobs at each level and raising my defense up to 5 points per level. This is much easier to do at the pre level 29 mobs than once you hit the high levels since those higher level mobs do too much damage. Many high level necros regretted not doing this while they were leveling.
