Does the pet power increase only work while the foci item is equiped? Or do you only have to have it equiped when you cast the pet to get the bonus permanetly for that pet?

It works when you cast, after you cast it it's free and clear, I have my focus on my 1.0 which I don't equipe unless I'm casting a pet.

You only have to have it equiped when summoning the pet. So swapping out the pet focus item for something with better stats is fine.

Wearing a pet focii makes you summon a completely different minion. IE you're not summoning Dark Assasin anymore you're summoning Dark Assasin.a(b/c/d/e) pending your worn focus. After that you can remove the focus. You'll still have your new/different pet.

I've always wondered about this. Can you define "different"? I just got the Vermilion Batfur Sash, but I have no clue what that focus actually DOES. What the heck does "Pet Power Increase" mean? More hps? More damage? I don't see any kind of a message when I summon my pet now either, is that normal?

Jeb actually posed this question to our CC and I think he's going to try and pass it to the Devs. Right now, AFAIK that information is not known to the public.

Along with any number of other possibilities, like increasing AC, other stats (if they have any)...
HP and Regen and Max hit and Level are all directly observable and easily confirmable, things like AC for instance would take some parsing to conclude, or a nice dev saying wtf it really does.

Which is why I asked..The other stuff a monkey can see. The ac, atk rating improvements, dmg bonus(if any) given to weapons they innately seem to have(htf does it backstab with that big reaver/harvester when I never see a piercing atk?). There's a slew of questions I'd like answers, if for nothing else to satisfy my own curiousity..although at least a handfull seem to share that curiousity.

A big thank you to Kirium of Cestus Dei for the following information.
The 45 means nothing, other than that pet focus is better than one with a lesser number.
You can't see pet's hp levels, though you can of course figure it out pretty accurately by various methods. The DPS gain with pet foci, at least for mage pets so I assume necro and BST aswell but those classes would have to parse it, is similar to what damage you would gain from a similar level DD foci (after allowing for the randomness).
The DPS gain pet focus for each foci over base mage pet is:
Summoners Boon: 8%
Minion of Darkness: 13%
Minion of Eternity: 15%
Ritual Summoning: 18%
Minion of Discord: 20%
Servant of Chaos: 23%
Spire Servant: 30%
One thing I noticed when testing Spire Servant during PoR beta though was that Servant of Chaos was doing 27% over base DPS rather than the 23% I got in the original tests (post pet dps change) in June 2005.
Anyway the above is what was intended (information was directly from Rytan and pets where underperforming slightly until June 2005). You also gain (mage pets again not sure on necro/bst ones) some increase in mitigation (on order of 1% reduction in mob mean hit per pet foci) with each foci, along with the modest HP gains.

A long while ago I saw a post form the dev in charge of the pet focus items. The context was an analysis of the scaling of the focus for the pet and so on. One thing the dev said stuck in my mind, mostly because it showed how short sighted they were when they made the pet focuses IMNHO.
Basically when you summon a focused pet, you summon a different mob entirely, In essence you don't summon and orc, you summon an orc legionairre. This really struck me as dumb, as it makes scaling the pet focus really really hard, since if they alter the amount of focus they have to redesign all the focused pets for all 3 classes. This is why there is a minimum level to the focus as well. You can't focus the level 48 pet we all love to pul with, for instance. It also explains why you only need to have the focus on you when you cast the spell, and not afterwards.
