I was just wondering, I see people from loads of classes talking about kiting all of the time, and I've gotten the general feeling that its like running away while some kind of damage happens but I can't find anywhere that details the use of this tactic.

more specificly how to use it as a necro.

and what makes the different kinds (aggro, fear...) different?

could someone help please?

thanks

Snare, run away, cast DoT, run some more, try not to think of the hours of life you are wasting performing such a monotonous task.

As Dae said really, the difference a necro has for most of his/her life is that we have the option of 2:

Aggro Kiting

Basically keeping aggro of the mob and keeping out of the way basic tactic is

snare dot dot dot pet dot run around refresshing dots till mob is dead

Fear Kiting

I found more efficient at lower levels (bearing in mind my lower levels were kunark era!)

Snare fear dot dot pet sit down refresh fear and dots as required.

This is slightly more dangerous these days than when I was fear kiting as mobs used to follow a predictable fear path whereas its slightly more random now.

Both allow you to kill mobs that are more powerful than you

Kiting is one of the reasons that necromancers are probably the best soloing classes in the game. As has already been explained, there are a few types.

Mallakith hit the most popular types, and had good instances of where to use which type. As he said, fear kiting is much more feasible in the early levels of the game. The idea is to snare, send pet in, load up on dots, and fear the mob. This way, you and your pet should not sustain any damage.

Aggro kiting takes precedence later on in the game. This is essentially the same process, except this time you are the one running around. Snare, load up on dots, send pet, then run in some kind of pattern to keep enough distance away from yourself in the mob so you can reload the dots or resnare the mob without having to worry about getting 1-rounded to the "LOADING...PLEASE WAIT..." screen.

Both are very effective, but, as you see, have their own seperate applications.

It is possible to control where your mob goes while fear kiting. If it begins to head towards an area you dont want it to go, just get in front of it and recast fear. It will turn around and run away from you, cause it's afraid of you.

Something else that will help you with agro kiting....

The first DoT I cast after snaring is ALWAYS disease. When that disease DoT drops its a good indication that snare will drop soon also and lets you know to recast snare without all the swearing and trying to cast it before mob gets to you ;)

Also they are great DPM spells.

Yup, that is exactly what I use the disease DoTs for. <_<
