Is is safe to delete old spells out of the spell book and move the new ones up to the first 2 pages? I find that it's less crowding, but does anybody else do it?

I'm at level 35, and I still have a lot of room left in the spell book. I say, don't try to delete anything. For one thing, who knows when I'll want to use a lower level, less-mana intensive spell for whatever reason? I still use engulfing darkness, even though I have dooming. I've still been using fear, even though I have invoke fear. I need to start using the newer spells, especially for certain mobs, but if it still works and I don't have to use as much mana, I'll try and get away with it.
Since you're still a long ways from having "too many" spells, you should just move your most unecessary ones to pages that are further in and move your most popular spells to the front. I would imagine the highest candidates for moving to the back of the book would be those really low level pet spells. But at 16, you can still make use of just about everything else.

I moved my spellbook around so that all my current and most used spells are in the 1st 4 pages. Even at 61 I still have plenty of room, and you may find a time you want to use the older spells. Then it is probably a preference thing as well. I personally want my complete spell book.

I have deleted lots of spells. I want to be able to shuffle through my entire spell book very quickly, and I find it more efficient to go through 4 pages of spells I might use than 10 pages looking through spells I'll never again load to find one spell. I also have them organized, not only by most recent DoTs, but backing up through my book, the most commonly used are in corners so I get to them quickly. Sitting in PoK looking for a spell is not the same as needing one in the middle of a raid or while you have aggro.
This brings up another question. Seems like there are some spells that won't delete. Whats with that ? I have a worthless spell I bought from an LDoN vendor that won't erase, as well as a few old pets spells, etc. I have moved them out of the way, but wonder why they won't delete ?

Not 100% on this but i think that you cannot delete no drop spells.
As for looking for a spell on your spellbook, i never did this...
It's easier to just right click on you gem bar and go through the spells there and select the one you need.
All you need to know is what category the spell you're looking for falls into, like, you are not going to look for VoS in HP Buffs spells :P
And i don't delete my spells, as someone said, i like my complete spellbook.

Amen to that! I love them for implementing that one. You can save whole spell sets by right clicking on the open spellbook icon. Saves lots of time. Have a spell set for Pet summoning, soloing, grouping, healing, undead, travelling and one for undead grouping. It's real nice to be able to summon your pet and have all the other pet buffs lined up and then two clicks and your ready for a pull.

My spell book is organized by spell type. I have a colum of poison dots, snares, disease based dots, HP recovering dots, heals, skins, etc....
I will keep up to 4 of the type of spell. For instance, at the top of one column is my newest undead nuke. Under it is the last 3 I just got. When I get a new one the bottom one gets deleted and the rest shift down.
Also, I usually do not delete spells until I have that buffer after reaching a new spell level. Live and learn... :D

I have spells sorted out and the book hotkeyed by type. It's a habit that was forced upon me in the swap-a-minute life of a shaman.
I also keep an old buff in each spell line handy for those obnoxious PoK beggars. Hey, as long as they have a gold shield, an arm and a foot... they're happy. The polite ones get the decent spells.
As far as I recall, only spells that are vendor stock may be deleted. Dungeon merchants don't count as "vendors" in this case.
One thing that I like about the drop-down spell menu: You don't sit to mem the spell until you actually select it, and then you stand right back up. It's making mid-fight spell swaps much easier.
hmmmm, never tried that right click trick on the gem until last night. I guess it's like anything else in that if you do it enough, you become proficient at it. Having to take the time to read and see what is in each catagory, plus the book still pops up while mem'ing, though it is all automated. I have a hot key that brings up my book, I page through with my left hand on the cursor right/left keys, and grab the spell I want with the mouse and drop it on my gem, and have a big close button on my book I click. Because I keep my spells down to only the ones I will use, and know the graphic for each one, there is no reading involved and I can swap out spells faster that it takes to cast most of them. I have been doing it this way for a long time, so I'm very quick at it. I'm sure you guys that have other methods are equally quick. Like they say, there's more than one way to skin a cat :)

Yeah, once you get used to where the spells are listed in the dropdown menu it gets really easy. It's pretty straightforward though. Sheilding Line is under HP Buffs, Taps are under taps, NUkes are under Direct Damage and then again by what they are based on (Fire/Magic/Poison/Undead, same iwth DoT's) and Pet Spells are under pets. Some complaints I have about it are the listing issues with Insidious Retrogression and the two undead categories under detrimental. Still have issues remember the difference between those. Love the spell sets too, but it's annoying when you get a new spell that's an upgrade to another spell and you have that one in more than one spell set, I.E. lifetaps and FD's.

As far as deleting spells go, I don't think you can delete quested spells either. Not sure if I heard that somewhere or I'm daydreaming about hearing it somewhere.

Like another mentioned I keep all my newest spell up on pages in front. Instead of deleting spell i just stick them in back of spell book. those are for farming imo i just leave them there when im killing lvl 2 spiders and lvl 15 lions and stuff not worth busting out a ebolt or something on. But this is also from a shaman perspective as mentioned above lol. just my two cp keep all your spells just file them in the back in order or whatever you feel like. Usualy mess with book while selling in bazaar when I dont have much else to d then let pet go tear some people up in arena. Not really used the quick reference gudes they have mentioned do swear by the spell set though makes life easy. Well running a little long so gluck.

I sorta do a combination of two ways, all of my life i use saved sets (can't get any faster then 2 clicks :) ) and around level 30 or so when i have a few spells of each set i start organizing them by set, Misc. spells on a page, like gate and feign death, poison dots on a page, lifetaps ect.... when i get alot of one set, just send the old one to page 50 or so..

careful....
some of your very first spells have cool uses... even if you have upgrades.
for instance... level 4 fear spell. by the time you are in your mid 50's you will have had two upgrades to this spell. But... agro kiting in the planes there is nothing better than level 4 fear spell to hold agro on a MOB. because the mobs are too high to work on you get a message that it is resisted. but it counts as a resist. resisted spells agro mob like crazzzy.
there are a couple others that are great to have but this is just one instance... Another is once you hit high you can farm using low level spells and your uber pet with zero downtime because of the extremely low casting cost.
of course you could always buy back most of the spells you delete as you find a use for them... I deleted alot of my spells and wish I had not. The low level spells do have a use. they are faster to cast... cost almost no mana... and like mentioned earlier in agro kiting they are priceless.
my 2 coppers.

I know my spellbook inside and out. If I need to swap a spell out at any given time, I already know what page the spell is on, so I just /book <page number> so the book opens to the exact page I need. Been working for me since I started practicing that method.
