  • Returning to EQ

So, I am returning to EQ and thinking about going necro again. I cannot remember what level mine is but pretty sure he is over 71. I have a few questions, if anyone has the time and/or patience.

    1) Is it possible for a Necro to solo/molo to max level-ish (95) without a bajillion AAs? I know as a necro, I shouldn't need a merc, but not sure what has changed since I have been gone.

    2) I know I need pet focus items, but are there any other items that are hidden gems, or must haves that I should look at getting? (pretty sure out epic is still pretty epic right?

    3) Any other advice anyone can lend?

Really looking forward to playing again. I do have another account but I will probably leave it silver and use it sparingly.

    Thank you in advance.

epic 1.5/2.0/2.5 is still epic yes.

Yes you can max level your necro solo with few AA (Auto-grant AAs can bump up that total) Kiting is still awesome even at max level. Low AA totals probably just means slower more mana intensive kills.

If you want to gear yourself up, you will probably have to molo and have a decent pet focus, as some pet tanking will be required for summoners. Also frequent use of swarm pet spells when they become available will help with those summoners.

molo = mercenary soloing which means that you have a healer mercenary that will heal your pet while you load up the dots. If the mob doesn't summon, you can root rot (root the mob and load dots to watch it kill it) or agro kite.

Should I try to level higher than 75 which I am pretty sure where I stopped with my necro and hit the AA button? Or does that level me to 85 and then give me all the AAs?

        Couple of more additional questions.

        1) How many times can we do the auto AA?
        - Like could I level to 90 (or sweet talk someone into pling me, hehe) and hit it again and get more?

2a) Can I solo the J5 Merc before I will need him?
2b) If I ever need a merc, is the J5 helear always the choice or has anyone had any luck with a DPS merc? I know leveling it is typically the J1 Tank to like 65 or 70.

        3) You were talking about root rotting. IIRC, that is pretty much a death setence for my pet. If I do it I should be doing a pet hold correct? Or have a headler etc?

I am going to peruse the forums for some hunting ground guides and AA guides. Before I ask a question that isn't posted there.

        Thank you again.

You click the autogrant button and the next time you zone, it will award you all the AAs you are eligible for at that level. And every time you level it will give you more AA until you reach the end of the autogrant, which is 85 or 90th level, I forget. it is a turn on and forget type of thing.

Root rotting is a pet free activity.

at 85 can do the quest in Feerrott to get the J5 merc access. Cleric merc is the way to go for molo. You will use it when you pet tank, and that is it. If you group, it can be nice to have a DPS merc if there is already a healer in group. But for soloing with a merc (moloing) a dps merc will just take half your xp without adding much. It is best to root rot or kite without a merc for xp, and pet tank with a cleric merc if you need to kill mobs that summon.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully, I can go gold/All Access soon. I think I might have vet on this guy, or should at least be eligible for another one.

I will also need to read through all the activatable AAs that I will have and might need to regear him.

Anyone think it will be worth doing the auto 85 for the free gear/spells?

My necro was already well over the cap when this was first made available.

However, I have five characters that were all eligible for the free 85 Heroic Character when the expansion first went live; ***FREAKING YEAH*** it is worth the free gear/spells/AA.

              At least in my opinion.

Hopefullly this will still be an option when I activate my membership. I am still trying to decide between a Mage and a Necro, mage is 83, Necro is 85, same account. I like Necros more, so will probably still go with it.

The option is always available; but it costs money to make it happen. If you have old accounts lying around (all five of the accounts I list above were "Alt Accounts" that I created years ago), then they had one free heroic update each. Not sure if that is still the case or if it was just when the heroics were first made available, though (I used up all my extra accounts, ha ha!).

You can still collect the free 500SC each month while you have a gold membership and use that to create a Heroic character; but then you'd have to pay a real $25 to transfer that toon to another account (I did that with the Jentarius ranger above because he was on my Main account; I used the free Heroic upgrade to get him to 85 and then used the free SC to move him to a dummy account that I created just for him).

Just some ideas. Best of luck to you and welcome back!

P.S. Create a free Magelo account to sync your characters and track any changes or recommendations for the future.
